website of the week: Blingo!

i'm a little slow this week, sorry!

this is my favorite new search engine--blingo.com! it's definitely one of the best free things on the net.

all you have to do is use it to search as you would Google (it's powered by Google's API) and you can randomly win free stuff. cool huh?

each day you search using Blingo, you are entered to win $10 million!

only the first 25 searches in a day count towards winning a prize... so don't abuse it! and, if you invite your friends (after signing up for an account), any prize they win, you win the exact same one, even if it's a car!

start searching now :-) have fun!

Nice post! Blingo is a great concept. Publisher's Clearing House is also doing something similar here: http://search.pch.com/

The only disappointments with Blingo and PCH has to do with the effectiveness of the actual searches (which is why one uses such things, after all). Blingo and PCH both use the Yahoo/Live/Ask trio of search engines, which are inferior to Google in terms of useful links found. Google will find about about 4 or 5 useful, non-commercial links to Yahoo's 1. I've tried using Blingo as my regular web-surfing tool, but always end up going back to Google out of frustration at Blingo's superficial and ineffectual search results.

Moreover, contrary to Blingo's promotional copy (and unlike Google), there is no visible difference between sponsored and non-sponsored links. They all look the same. (Kind of a cheat, if you ask me.)

I wish Blingo had better search engines, and made a clearer delineation between sponsored and non-sponsored links. If they did, I would use Blingo all the time. Unfortunately for Blingo, even the off chance of winning a prize isn't worth the time I'll save by doing my searches on Google.

Blingo is a brilliant concept, it just needs a little work, and a lot less mercenary marketing.
